What is Inkjet Coding? What are the areas of use?

Devices that write text, production date, SKT (expiration date), TETT (recommended delien consumption date) serial number, batch number, lot number, logo, barcode, QR code and similar information by spraying ink on the products produced without touching the product surface are called inkjet coding / inkjet printer / inkjet marking / dating / marking. Inkjet printers are divided into two as small and large characters.

For small characters, the so-called continuous inkjet “CIJ” technology is usually used. In this system, there is ink flowing in a continuous cycle. By deflecting the charged ink up and down, the desired information is written by spraying it on the product.

In addition to small character systems, thermal inkjet “TIJ” technology also comes to the fore. This technology, which uses the HP guaranteed cartridge system, has started to be used in many coding solutions with its ever-improving ink quality. In this technology, a small heater is used that instantly heats the ink. Some of the ink vaporizes and this gas bubble pushes the rest of the ink forward, towards the product. This is done thousands of times per second. In this way, the desired information is written with the sprayed ink.

In large character systems, the “DOD” system, which is generally called drop on demand, is used. In this system, the ink is sprayed on the product surface by means of valves that open and close according to the text and the desired text is written. Inkjet coding devices can encode at high speeds on all kinds of absorbent and non-absorbent surfaces (metal, fabric, wood, ceramic, plastic, paper, glass) according to the type of ink they use.

What is small character inkjet coding (CIJ)?

What does CIJ stand for?
CIJ stands for Continuous ink jet. The printer creates a stream of small ink droplets and selects some of the droplets to print, creating the characters that go into the product. The unused droplets are eventually returned to the printer to become part of the ink stream.
What is the working principle of the CIJ?
CIJ printers charge individual ink drops that form a message. Each drop, with its specific charge, flies through the magnetic field generated inside the print head. The amount of charge location on the drop determines the amount of deflection it has in this field. The most deflected drops make up the top line of code or the top drops of a single line of code. Slightly deflected drops make up the bottom line codes or the bottom drops of single line characters. Drops that do not receive any charge do not deflect and ground into the print head and return to the ink system.
Which apps are recommended for CIJ?
CIJ printers can be used to print on paper products, plastic, metal, glass and others. Typical applications include Milk containers, Soda cans, pharmaceuticals, small cardboard boxes, wiring and small component marking.
What is the difference between CIJ and communication coders?
CIJ printers never touch the product. CIJ printers spray ink one drop of air at a time in a pattern that prints the code programmed in the printer when a moving product passes by. The typical distance from the printer’s print head to the product is 3/16 of an inch.
What is the difference between CIJ and DOD technologies?
The difference between CIJ and DOD is that in CIJ, ink is continuously circulated through the printer system from the fluidics system and returned to the fluidics system. In DOD technology, the ink is only dispersed when the printer is printing.

Are thermal inkjet coding (TIJ) machines all the same?

When you want to buy a small character thermal inkjet coding printer, the first question to ask is “are all thermal inkjet inkjet printers the same?”. The answer is simply no.

What should we consider when choosing a thermal inkjet coding device?

Let’s start with the two most critical features to consider in thermal inkjet coding printers; Ink Spray Distance Ink Drying Time Ink Spray Distance Thermal inkjet inkjet coding devices (TIJ) are an open nozzle spray system, the nozzle mouths are open to the atmosphere and there is no valve seal in the print head to ensure ink pressure. Ink pressure is what helps to propel the ink drops a longer distance from the printhead to the target product. For this reason, the nozzles of thermal inkjet inkjet coders are able to spray ink drops approximately half as far or less than small character continuous inkjet inkjet printers (CIJ). This is something to pay close attention to because uneven or recessed products need the extra inkjet distance for good print quality. All Thermal inkjet inkjet coding devices (TIJ) are suitable for flat and slightly recessed surfaces.

For example, jar lids, product labels, continuous form packaging materials, cartons, parcels, pipes, boxes, etc. are ideal. However, Polytij thermal inkjet coding devices, with its special polymer thermal inkjet technology, makes a significant difference in ink jet distance compared to its competitors. In this way, it can be very successful on more recessed surfaces. Ink Drying and Waiting Time Drying Time is a critical requirement in fast production lines, especially for those using non-porous packaging materials such as metal, plastic, cellophane and lacquered cardboard, etc. Specially developed Polytij solvent-containing thermal inkjet inks can fully compete with the inks of continuous inkjet coding devices on non-porous surfaces with its special formula that provides a drying time of 1 second. In addition, thanks to the special ink formula, the open waiting time of the printer cartridge is again maximized. These features make Polytij ink cartridges different from the ink cartridges used in other thermal inkjet inkjet coding devices (TIJ).

Inkjet Coding and Laser Marking Machines: Coding Technologies in Industrial Production

Today, different coding technologies are used to print date, serial number, barcode and other information on products in industrial production processes. The most common of these are inkjet coding and laser marking systems. These technologies meet both legal requirements and facilitate product tracking by making high-speed and permanent marking on production lines.

What is Inkjet Coding?

Inkjet coding is a method of printing on surfaces with liquid inkjet technology. There are two main types: continuous inkjet (CIJ) and thermal inkjet (TIJ).

Continuous Inkjet (CIJ): Ideal for high speed production lines. It can be applied to various surfaces such as plastic, glass, metal and paper.
Thermal Inkjet (TIJ): This cartridge-based system offers sharp and clear prints with lower maintenance costs.

Inkjet coding is preferred in many sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and automotive. Since it is ink-based, solvent, water or UV curing inks can be used depending on the surface.

What is Laser Marking?

Laser marking provides a permanent coding by marking the surface directly with a laser beam. The laser beam makes marking by creating physical or chemical changes on the surface of the material. Common laser types are as follows:

Fibre Laser: Provides deep and durable marking on metal, plastic and hard surfaces.
CO2 Laser: Suitable for paper, glass, wood and organic materials.
UV Laser: Provides precise marking on heat-sensitive surfaces and is frequently used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Laser marking is more economical and environmentally friendly in the long term as it does not require ink or consumables. It also offers an advantage in terms of security as it provides an indelible and non-corrosive marking.

Inkjet coding and laser marking are two key technologies used to mark product information in production processes. Businesses should choose the most appropriate method in line with their production speeds, surface types and budgets. While laser marking stands out for those looking for a more permanent and maintenance-free solution, inkjet coding may be more suitable for those looking for flexibility and low initial investment costs.

You can get expert support to learn more about these two technologies and determine the most suitable solution for your business.

Inkjet coding devices play an important role in packaging and packaging processes. These devices optimise the production process by quickly and efficiently printing dates, batch numbers, barcodes and other important information on products. Achieving legible and durable prints can be a major challenge in the packaging industry, especially on dark coloured packaging. However, thanks to advanced inkjet coding technologies, clear and contrasting prints can be made on dark packaging using a choice of coloured inks.

These devices can adapt to different surface types and produce quality prints on plastic, glass, metal, cardboard and other materials. Inkjet coding systems, which are frequently used especially in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors, minimise errors by providing speed and accuracy in production processes. The use of coloured ink on dark coloured packaging increases the effectiveness of informing consumers by making the logo and warning messages of the brands more prominent.
